DENOMINACIONES Y RETROSCOPIAS

Adán Vallecillo: the denominated object

After an event such as “Doubtful Strait”1, that made coincide many artists from several continents at a speci c time and in many spaces in San José, TEOR/éTica intends to dedicate its exhibitions of 2007 and 2008 to a deeper research into individual gures, particularly from the region but in keeping with its international projection. In some cases, the invitation seeks to offer the challenge of a personal show to regional emerging artists, a kind of “second generation” that follows closely the group of artists, curators or cultural agents who, from the end of the 80’s and towards the following decade have made substantial contributions that had an incidence in the recent art history of Central America. In other cases, we will deal with these more established artists, who can be important interlocutors that can consolidate a dialogue with the local scene. In a parallel way, we have also asked external curators and critics to collaborate as writers in the regular publications of the exhibitions of the next two years, and we are initiating this cycle with an essay by Ramón Caballero, an art historian who has dedicated his time to re ect on the recent developments of art in Honduras.

TEOR/éTica is pleased to present as its rst guest the young Honduran artist Adán Vallecillo, who is part of a generation we could call “post-mesótica”2, nourished by the new forms of approaching visual practice in the region, but also stimulated by the new critical structures and exhibition possibilities that have created various apertures and connections towards the outside but that also prove a particular perception of the regional context. Together with his studio practice, Vallecillo assumes his own theoretical conceptualization, and has tried to project it towards collaborative work, as curator, teacher and organizer in the Honduran context, articulating thought and writing about the relations of art in that environment, simultaneously to his own personal production.

Adán Vallecillo’s exhibition in TEOR/éTica, as a follow- up chapter to “Panópticos”3, presents an array of objects and objectualized painting. Objects have become, for this generation, just another possibility in visual languages, rather than a rupture statement, as it was for their colleagues only a few years older. However, the decision originates from a similar attitude: a speci c mental discourse materialised in a gaze that reveals tacit symbolic values in instruments, appliances, and everyday tools, of an easy access and recognizable to anyone in their primary function, but that carry veiled connotations and meanings for those that can permeate beyond their mere practical intention. Among the artists who have marked a turning point in object-related pieces in the region is Priscilla Monge (Costa Rica), whose work emerges from an intimate questioning of personal experiences, and transcends this, motivated by the fears and phobias, aggressions and hidden situations within the terror of daily life, perceived from a feminine, personal gaze, immersed in a society that assumes itself as un-con ictive. Personal con ict of otherness and aggression has also been behind the research that Patricia Belli (Nicaragua) has undertaken with clothing and other personal items. Clothing and skin-like materials were also used in the early nineties by Pablo Swezey (Guatemala) to re ect on the Guatemalan reality. Raúl Quintanilla (Nicaragua) has been using quotidian objects linked to the popular culture and diet of Nicaragua to confront in a sarcastic way a political – and also military – reality tinted by hypocrisy and corruption.

Within the generation that emerges around the year 2000, Darío Escobar (Guatemala) developed work initially in which, through the monstrous hybridity between the sacred baroque iconography and the one linked to the global entertainment society, refers to two historical moments through opposed reverential spaces. The rst works of Guillermo Tovar (Costa Rica) were also directed towards elements of the childhood play world, of toys themselves, altered to subvert their apparently inoffensive intention and evidencing the absurdity of certain aspects of the adult world. Lucía Madriz (Costa Rica) and Lezlie Milson (Panama) use the domestic universe to ironise on certain social practices linked to gender issues from the feminine side, while Roberto Guerrero (Costa Rica) subverts stereotypes associated with masculinity, turning weapons or sports equipment in richly decorated jewel like ornaments.

In this way, the object has turned into an essential part of the regional art practice, producing more or less successful results. It is possible that within the region, the strongest link of Vallecillo’s work would be with Priscilla Monge, who builds her pieces based on a limited use of elements, preferring a meaning conveyed by a semiotic reading of the relations between these elements, and by refusing a kind of craftiness that would condition its interpretation. There is something “aseptic” that unites both their work. However, while Priscilla is inspired to a great extent by cinematographic culture and scenographic resources, Vallecillo comes from a more theoretical training and tends to engage in the analysis of the forms of knowledge, in epistemology, in the relations between art and politics, but most of all, intends to build a structure of aesthetic thought. It is worth noting that both artists have been interested in the prison universe, in the effects of con nement, in marginality and that both of them have done projects in jails, but also, each one from a different position, both coincide in a subtle and seducing visual game, avoiding oversimpli cation, but rather, creating a more complex reading, at the same time engaging in an ambiguous relation with the spectator, who does not know whether to allow himself to be seduced in order to go beyond the rst gaze.

In his artist statement about this exhibition titled “Denominations and Retroscopies”, Adán Vallecillo puts forth the concept of designations of origin as a cataloguing method, an interpretation structure of his own work and who knows, maybe even a valuing one. This term, related to geography and latitude in terms of quality. guaranteed by the origin of a particular territory, calls our attention, as it is directly linked to ne foodstuffs identi ed with the “good life” - wine, cheese, fruit, tea, coffee, tobacco, - only that in Vallecillo’s statement, the origin that denominates is more related to the phenomena of knowledge and of relations between concepts: equilibrium, orientation, measuring, asepsis and prosthesis are correspondingly re ected in normalisation (for fear of dissidence, of difference) utopia (as a real possibility but also as ideological manipulation), reason (as an authoritarian and directing principle), violence (by eliminating contaminators to the status quo) and fetishisation (as the transposition of values from the real towards the arti ce and simulacra). So, in some cases, this re ecting effect seems to stem from the excesses in the denomination of origin. In others, one could think of its transformation into a superior or inferior state, towards the evidence of a more or less ef cient functioning of power, towards a closer or farther approach/comprehension of the surrounding context, in any case, it is about levels of action and social exchange, about the knowledge of the world we live in. Geography and latitude here refer to the belonging to a particular environment: certain materials or tools that make up the objects come from old stocks that can only be found in his home city, not even in shops in San José, and, like people who come from this region, relate with a physical/temporal space which differs from the global present. Personal context is also present in the references to the military environment, to the strict hygiene discipline and the fear of contamination – the infectious focus, subversion, disobedience and chaos – all elements that endanger hierarchy and following of superior orders, in sum, a denomination of origin that contains the ve denominations of Adán Vallecillo, and that is present in all of them: control and surveillance.

Doubtful Strait (Estrecho Dudoso) curated by the writer and by Tamara Díaz, was a large visual arts event taking place in all museums of San José, between December 2006 and February 2007 besides many public spaces, including over 80 artists. A bilingual catalogue and a documentary DVD were produced by TEOR/éTica
Mesótica was the title of the three annual exhibitions the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo organised between 1995 and 1998, continental abstraction, central american art and installations, respectively. The Central American mesótica marked a particular turning for the region, not only locally but internationally, as it itinerated for over a year in Europe, and modi ed to quite an extent the exoticising perception that surrounded regional art.
Panopticos took place in 2005 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in the former space of the Portales Gallery.
